The trustee in bankruptcy steers the debtor from financial ruin to a fresh start. Appointed by the court, the trustee is tasked to admit or reject proofs of debt, playing a quasi-judicial role that demands not only fairness to the creditor whose proof is being adjudicated but also to the body of creditors as a whole. This requires him to be efficient, economical and proportionate in drawing upon the limited resources of the bankrupt’s estate.
