Power to intercept communication
(1)
Notwithstanding the provisions of any other written law, the Public Prosecutor may, if he considers that it is likely to contain any information relating to the payment of ransom for the release of a person who has been wrongfully restrained or wrongfully confined, authorise any police officer —
to intercept, detain and open any postal article in course of transmission by post;
to intercept any message transmitted or received by telecommunications; or
to intercept or listen to any conversation by telephone.
(2)
For the purposes of this section, “postal article” and “telecommunications” shall have the meanings assigned to them in the Postal Services Act 1999 and the Telecommunications Act 1999, respectively.
