Section 73

Medical stores

(1)

The Authority may, with the approval of the Minister, make regulations requiring ships to carry any medicines and other medical stores (including books containing instructions and advice) that may be specified in the regulations.

(2)

If a ship goes to sea or attempts to go to sea without carrying the medical stores which it is required to carry by regulations made under this section, the master or the owner of the ship (each called a defendant) shall be guilty of an offence and shall be liable on conviction to a fine not exceeding $5,000 unless the defendant proves that the failure to carry the medical stores was not due to the defendant’s neglect or default.

(3)

If a person empowered under this Act to inspect the medical stores carried in a ship is not satisfied that the ship carries the stores which it is required to carry by the regulations made under this section, the ship may be detained.
