Functions of Specialists Accreditation Board
(1)
The functions of the Board shall be —
to determine the qualifications, experience and other conditions for registration as specialists under this Act;
to define specialties in medicine for the purposes of maintaining and keeping the Register of Specialists;
to determine the training programmes to be recognised for persons who intend to qualify for registration as specialists under this Act;
to grant to persons who have the qualifications or experience and who meet the conditions for registration as specialists under this Act certificates to that effect;
to recommend to the Medical Council programmes for the continuing medical education of persons who are registered as specialists under this Act; and
to advise the Medical Council on matters affecting or connected with the registration of specialists under this Act.
(1A)
The Board may further subdivide the specialties in medicine into further classes of sub-specialties and this section shall apply, with the necessary modifications, to such sub-specialties.
(1B)
A reference in this Act to a specialty shall be construed as including a reference to a sub-specialty.
(2)
Any person who desires to have a certificate from the Board to certify that he has the qualifications or experience and who meet the conditions for registration as specialists under this Act may apply to the Board.
(3)
Any person who is aggrieved by the refusal of the Board to grant the certificate may, within one month of the notice of the refusal, appeal to the Minister whose decision shall be final.
