Power of Minister to close registry and cancel certificate of registry
(1)
The Minister may close the registry of a Singapore ship (except in relation to any unsatisfied mortgages entered therein) and cancel its certificate of registry for any contravention of any of the provisions of this Act or any international convention applicable to Singapore.
(2)
The Minister may close the registry of a Singapore ship (except in relation to any unsatisfied mortgages entered therein) and cancel its certificate of registry if he is satisfied that it is not in the public interest for the ship to continue to be registered as a Singapore ship.
(3)
Where the registry of a ship is closed under this section, the registered owner of the ship at the time of the closure shall, within 30 days of the closure, deliver up the certificate of registry to the Registrar for cancellation and if he fails to deliver up the certificate of registry within the specified period, he shall be guilty of an offence and shall be liable on conviction to a fine not exceeding $10,000.
