Disposal of property deposited at police stations
(1)
Any lost or unclaimed property deposited at a police station in accordance with any written law shall, if claimed within one month after the date of such deposit by any person who establishes his claim to such property to the satisfaction of the Commissioner, be returned to him on payment of any expenses reasonably incurred by the Commissioner in storing the property.
(2)
Notwithstanding subsection (1), if the lost or unclaimed property is of a perishable nature, it may be sold at once and the proceeds of sale forwarded to the Commissioner pending any claim to such property.
(3)
If at the end of one month after any lost or unclaimed property is deposited at a police station in accordance with subsection (1), no person has established a claim to the property to the satisfaction of the Commissioner, or immediately (even if less than one month) after the owner has given the Commissioner notice in writing that he is not claiming the property, the Commissioner may —
arrange for the property to be disposed of by public auction or otherwise; and
apply the proceeds of the sale to meet the expenses incurred by the Commissioner in storing and disposing of the property, and pay the balance, if any, to the Consolidated Fund.
