New section 8A

The principal Act is amended by inserting, immediately after section 8, the following section:“Power to order child or young person to be produced for assessment or treatment, etc.8A.—

(1)

Where the Director, a protector or a police officer is satisfied on reasonable grounds that a child or young person is in need of care or protection, the Director, protector or police officer may by notice in writing order any person to —

(a)

produce the child or young person before the Director, protector or police officer at a specified time and place; or

(b)

produce the child or young person before a registered medical practitioner, a psychologist or an approved welfare officer for an assessment or for any medical or other treatment as may be necessary,following which the Director, protector or police officer may, if he thinks necessary, remove the child or young person and commit the child or young person to a place of temporary care and protection or to the care of a fit person until the child or young person can be brought before a Juvenile Court to be dealt with under section 49.(2) For the purposes of this section and sections 9 and 9A, a reference to a police officer is a reference to a police officer not below the rank of sergeant.”.
