Short title and commencement

This Act may be cited as the Judges’ Remuneration Act 1994 and shall come into operation on such date as the Minister may, by notification in the Gazette, appoint.

Remuneration of Judges

(1)

There shall be paid to the Chief Justice, every Judge of Appeal and every other Judge of the Supreme Court such annual pensionable salaries as the Minister may, from time to time by order published in the Gazette, determine.

A Judge of the Supreme Court shall receive, in addition to his salary, such pensionable and non-pensionable allowances and privileges as the Minister may determine, which shall not be less than such pensionable and non-pensionable allowances and privileges as a public officer receiving the same pensionable salary would receive.

(3)

Any salary or allowance payable to a Judge of the Supreme Court under this section shall —

(a)

commence from the date of appointment, but subject to the fulfilment of any condition on which the allowance is payable;

(b)

accrue from day to day; and

(c)

be payable monthly on the last day of each month or on such other day in each month as the Minister for Finance may from time to time determine.

Any order made under subsection (1) shall be presented to Parliament as soon as possible after publication.

Repeal and savings

(1)

The Judges’ Remuneration Act [Cap. 147] is repealed.

Section 2(2)(b) of the repealed Judges’ Remuneration Act shall continue to apply to a Judge of the Supreme Court appointed before the commencement of this Act.

The annual pensionable salary of a Judge of Appeal from 1st July 1993 to the day immediately before the commencement of this Act shall be $253,200.
