Communication devices
Subregulation 1
A communication device in a vehicle shall be fitted —
adjacent to a wheelchair space and in such a manner that it can readily be used by a wheelchair user occupying the wheelchair space; and
on the exterior of the vehicle adjacent to any entrance (other than an entrance that is in the rear of the vehicle) for wheelchair access which is outside the direct view of the driver.
Subregulation 2
Where the entrance for wheelchair access is in the rear of the vehicle, a communication device shall be fitted —
on the rearmost part of the side face of the vehicle from which passengers will board the vehicle; and (b)at a height of not less than 850 millimetres and not more than 1,000 millimetres measured vertically from the ground (with the vehicle at its minimum height if it is fitted with a kneeling system) to the centre of the device.
Subregulation 3
Any communication device fitted in accordance with paragraph (1) or (2) shall comply with the following requirements:
the device shall be capable of being operated by the palm of the hand;
the surround of the device shall contrast with the device and with the surface on which the surround is mounted; (c)when operated, the device shall activate an audible signal which enables the driver to identify that the device has been activated; (d)where the device is fitted in accordance with paragraph (1)(a) and has been activated, the device shall, upon subsequent activation, provide a visual signal which is visible to the driver; and
the visual signal referred to in sub-paragraph (d) shall only be capable of being de-activated upon the opening of at least one of the exits of the vehicle.
