I also urge the Government to relook at rules to permit adoption of children and guardianship by single women. Perhaps there is concern that such children growing up in an incomplete family environment will grow up dysfunctional. But I believe the risk is worth taking in order to confer the joys of motherhood and satisfy the maternal instincts of single women who, for biological or other reasons, are unlikely to be able to find a mate and procreate. Indeed, the decision to have children is ultimately not about the incentives but rather the whole experience of parenthood. Mating and procreation are part of our DNA, ensuring the survival of a species. But beyond that, as any parent, myself included, can attest to, there is unspeakable joy in raising children. Caring for a baby, stroking his hair, watching him learn to walk, utter the first syllables, return from school with excitement at what the teacher has taught, watching him play with new friends, win a competition, eventually going through university, graduating, marrying and having his own children, this is, as one recent property advertisement would say, "priceless".
