I have asked for a table to be distributed. If you look at the table, years 2002 and 2203, we have GDP growths of 4% and 2.9% respectively, and they were indeed very difficult years. Following a negative GDP growth in 2001, if Members cast their minds back, our GDP shrank by -2.3%. This was compounded by SARS and other factors. And because of that, if you look at the chart, 2002 and 2003 combined, those two years, we actually lost jobs, in other words, the economy, in terms of jobs, shrank about 36,000 in those two years. But in contrast, our economy and employment rebounded vigorously in 2004 and 2005 and we created together something like 181,000-182,000 jobs. These two periods served as very useful periods of contrasting fortunes and indeed, they provide for us valuable lessons that should guide our efforts and strategies, moving forward in helping all Singaporeans find jobs, earn decent wages and remain employable. Lest we forget too quickly, it would be useful for us to use this occasion where the economy is up and jobs have returned, to recap broad policies that have worked, many of which were prompted by Members of Parliament in this House. But we should also learn from the ideas that were not taken up or those, if implemented, would have created problems for us today.
