Regulation 17
Appointment of, and objection to, interpreter or shorthand writer
Subregulation 1
The court may, at any time, appoint any competent and impartial person to act as an interpreter or as a shorthand writer at a trial before the court.
Subregulation 2
Before any person acts as an interpreter or as a shorthand writer, an oath or affirmation in the appropriate form in the Third Schedule shall be administered to him in the presence of the accused.
Subregulation 3
Before any person is sworn or affirmed as an interpreter or as a shorthand writer —
the accused shall be given an opportunity to object to him; and
if the court thinks that the objection is reasonable, that person shall not act as an interpreter or as a shorthand writer.
