Short title and commencement

This Act may be cited as the Singapore Army (Amendment) Act, 1967, and shall, with the exception of sections 2 and 6 thereof, be deemed to have come into operation on the 1st day of August 1967.(2) Sections 2 and 6 of this Act shall be deemed to have come into operation on the 9th day of August, 1965.

Clause 2

Amendment of section 50

The proviso to section 50 of the Singapore Army Act, 1965 (hereinafter in this Act referred to as “the principal Act”) is hereby amended by deleting the word “Council” appearing in paragraph (v) thereof and substituting therefor the word “Board”.

New section 85A

The principal Act is hereby amended by inserting immediately after section 85 thereof the following new section: —“Mode of enlistment of national servicemen85A.—

(1)

Notwithstanding the provisions of section 85 of this Act, every person upon whom an enlistment notice has been served in accordance with section 11 of the National Service Ordinance, 1952 (M. Ord. 37 of 1952), and who is required by such notice to enlist in the Singapore armed forces shall, as from the day specified in such notice, be deemed to have been duly enlisted for service with the Singapore armed forces.(2) Every such person shall take an oath or affirmation in such form as may be prescribed by the Army Board in the presence of an officer.(3) Any person who refuses to take the oath or affirmation specified in subsection (2) of this section shall be guilty of an offence and shall be liable on conviction to a fine not exceeding one thousand dollars or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding six months or to both such fine and imprisonment.”.

Amendment of section 86

Section 86 of the principal Act is hereby amended by deleting the words “three months” appearing in the first line thereof and substituting therefor the words “one month”.

Amendment of section 97

Subsection (1) of section 97 of the principal Act is hereby deleted and the following substituted therefor: —“(1) No person shall be enlisted in the Singapore armed forces unless he is a citizen of Singapore.”.

Clause 6

Amendment of section 158

Section 158 of the principal Act is hereby amended —

(a)

by deleting the expression “Modification of Laws (Armed Forces) (Singapore) Order, 1963” appearing therein and substituting therefor the expression “Federation Regiment Ordinance, 1952”; and

(b)

by deleting the marginal reference “L.N. 233/63” thereto and substituting therefor “M. Ord. 27 of 1952”.
