Regulation 24

Audible warning instruments

Subregulation 1

Every motor vehicle shall be fitted with an instrument or apparatus capable of giving audible and sufficient warning of its approach or position.

No such instrument or apparatus shall consist of —

(a)

a gong or bell, except in the case of a motor vehicle that is an authorised ambulance or is used solely for fire brigade, military, police or customs purposes;

(b)

a siren, except in the case of a vehicle used solely for fire brigade, military, police or customs purposes, or a vehicle owned by a police officer or a civil defence officer and used by him in the execution of his duties;

(c)

a multi-tone horn giving a succession of different notes, except in the case of an authorised ambulance; or

(d)

a sound producing device giving an unduly harsh, shrill, loud or alarming noise, except in the case of a vehicle used solely for fire brigade, military, police or customs purposes.

In addition, subject to paragraph (2B), each instrument or apparatus mentioned in paragraph (1), which is fitted on a motor vehicle registered on or after 1 July 2026, must be constructed and fitted in compliance with the requirements in —

(a)

UN Regulation 28;

(b)

Japanese Article 43; or

(c)

any other standard that the Registrar or an authorised officer may recognise as having an equivalent level of safety to, or a more stringent level of safety than, any of the standards mentioned in sub-paragraph (a) or (b).

Paragraph (2A) does not apply to a motor vehicle registered or re-registered as —

(a)

a classic vehicle;

(b)

a normal vintage vehicle;

(c)

a restricted vintage vehicle; or

(d)

a revised use vintage vehicle.

Subregulation 3

Every trailer registered on or after 1st July 1980, shall be fitted with an instrument or apparatus capable of giving audible and sufficient warning of any reverse movement of the trailer.

Subregulation 4

With effect from 1st July 1981, every trailer shall be fitted with an instrument or apparatus capable of giving audible and sufficient warning of any reverse movement of the trailer.

Subregulation 5

Every prime mover registered on or after 1st April 1981 shall be so constructed or equipped that it shall, when attached to any trailer fitted with an instrument or apparatus under paragraph (3) or (4), automatically activate the instrument or apparatus when the prime mover is in the reverse gear.

Subregulation 6

With effect from 1st July 1981, every prime mover shall be so constructed or equipped that it shall, when attached to any trailer fitted with an instrument or apparatus under paragraph (3) or (4), automatically activate the instrument or apparatus when the prime mover is in the reverse gear.

Subregulation 7

The instrument or apparatus fitted to a trailer under paragraph (3) or (4) shall not have a multi-tone or produce an unduly harsh, shrill, loud or alarming noise.
