Periodic inspection, testing and approval of vehicle
of Road Traffic (Public Service Vehicles) Rules
Every vehicle used as a public service vehicle shall be inspected, tested and approved by the Registrar, an authorised officer or an authorised examiner within the meaning of the Road Traffic (Motor Vehicles, Test) Rules —
at least once in every 6 months where such vehicle is an omnibus or a trishaw; (b)at least once a year where such vehicle is a private bus, an excursion bus, a self-drive private hire car, a private hire bus or a school bus;
in the case of a taxi —
if the taxi is less than 3 years old, at least once a year; or
if the taxi is 3 years old or more, at least once in every 6 months; and
in the case of a chauffeured private hire car —
if the motor vehicle is re‑registered on or after 1 January 2025 as a chauffeured private hire car under rule 33H of the Road Traffic (Motor Vehicles, Registration and Licensing) Rules (R 5) —
at least once during the period of 15 months after the grant of a licence to use that motor vehicle as a chauffeured private hire car; and
after the end of the period mentioned in sub‑paragraph (A), at least once during each subsequent period of —
(BA)if the chauffeured private hire car is less than 10 years old, 12 months; or
(BB)if the chauffeured private hire car is 10 years old or more, 6 months;
if the chauffeured private hire car is 10 years old or more and the licence issued under section 13 of the Act is renewed on or after 1 January 2025 —
at least once during the period of 6 months after the renewal of the licence; and
at least once during each subsequent period of 6 months; or
in any other case, at least once a year.
