Additional requirements relating to transport by vessels

Subregulation 1

No package having a surface radiation level greater than 2 mSv/h shall be transported by vessel except under special arrangement or in or on a vehicle on board a vessel and such vehicle is under exclusive use and complies with the requirements of regulation 20(1).

Subregulation 2

The transport of consignments by means of a vessel under special use which, by virtue of its construction, or by reason of its being chartered, is dedicated to the purpose of carrying radioactive material, shall be excepted from the requirements in regulation 12(4) provided that —

(a)

a radiation protection programme for the shipment shall be prepared and shall be approved by the competent authority of the flag state of the vessel and, when requested, by the Chief Executive;

(b)

stowage arrangements shall be predetermined for the whole voyage, including any consignments to be loaded at ports of call en route; and

(c)

the loading, handling and stowage and the unloading of the consignments shall be supervised by persons qualified in the transport of radioactive material.
