Regulation 52

Scaffolds and work platforms erected on cantilever or jib supports

Subregulation 1

It shall be the duty of the responsible person to ensure that the requirements of paragraphs (2) to (4) are complied with.

Subregulation 2

A scaffold in a workplace that is erected on cantilever or jib supports shall be adequately supported, fixed and anchored on the supports to prevent displacement.

Subregulation 3

The cantilever or jib supports used to support the scaffold shall —

(a)

have outriggers of adequate length and cross section; and

(b)

be constructed in accordance with the design and drawings of a professional engineer.

Subregulation 4

Where a work platform in a workplace rests on bearers that let into a wall at one end and it does not have other support, the bearers shall —

(a)

pass through the wall;

(b)

be of adequate strength; and

(c)

be securely fastened on the other side of the wall.

Subregulation 5

For the purposes of this regulation and regulation 53, “cantilever or jib support” includes any structure, including a bracket or beam, that projects beyond a fulcrum or point of attachment and that is not supported directly from the ground or floor below.
