of Radiation Protection (Ionising Radiation) Regulations 2023

Regulation 25

Precautions for safe storage and keeping of radioactive materials

Subregulation 1

Where there is any possibility that any chemical, radiation, or other action might weaken or rupture the container of a radioactive material sufficiently to cause leakage from the container, the container must be provided with a suitable secondary tray, or catchment, adequate to retain the entire amount of such radioactive material in that container.

Subregulation 2

Storage containers for radioactive materials exceeding 35 GBq must be designed to be —

(a)

resistant to fire and any severe shock or stress;

(b)

able to withstand any temperature that may be reasonably anticipated; and

(c)

structurally sound having regard to corrosion, radiation, temperature effects and chemical or other action that may develop over the period of intended storage or use.

Subregulation 3

Suitable provisions must be made to minimise the radiation hazard to any individual who may be doing emergency work in or about the place where the radioactive material is stored or kept in the event of fire, flood or any other catastrophe or emergency.
